Thursday’s Round 3 Game

Round 3

This game was back and forth.  I should have lost multiple times, and then didn’t see the point of his piece sac until he was winning his piece back.  He just barely flagged on move thirty-three, and I called his flag.  I added more moves after that to show what I was going to try if the game had continued, but it’s only a draw if it had, objectively speaking anyway.  If 37.Re1, then …Rg3+ is a draw.

  1. Crazy game, I am not accustomed to this kind of positions. 🙂
    11. Kf2 was a mistake that he didn’t use, he could play Bxe5. After 11. Bb5+ Bd7 12. Qxg4 Bxe5 13. dxe5 Qxe5+ 14. Kf2 Ne4+ 15. Nxe4 Qd4+ there was a perpetual.
His knight sacrifice was not sound, you could prove it by playing 23. Rh3 instead of 23. hxg5.
He could win your rook after 32. Re3 by playing Rg3+.
Yeah, in the end it was a draw.

  2. Yeah, Kf2 was a big mistake. In fact, the king belongs, crazy enough, on d1! I liked it when Stockfish suggested it, but it didn’t hit me OTB.

Bb5+ is best. OTB, I thought he would play …Kd8. The hard part seemed to be that he had more than one option, response to it, but I didn’t realize that Kd8 and Re8 aren’t possible because I have Rd1, and OTB I kept missing that Bb5 covers e8, probably because I would expect him to play …a6 and …b5 first.

It’s funny, the point of his knight sacrifice eluded me, so I fell into this plans and gave the piece back.

Yeah, that’s funny I dropped that rook while trying to flag him. I can’t my believe my rating is now based on that baloney. hehe. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve been playing long enough, you know all the swindles, and some are just psychological ones. 😉
